November 2021
Joan Banger who was a member from 1964 - 1994 sadly died on 30 November 2021
She had served on the committee and was archivist for the society until about 2013
I am indeed saddened to hear of the death of Joan Banger. Joan was a lovely person and a wonderful artist. Her sculpture was amazing. She was a former Chairman and President and I think it would be fair to say that she and her husband, Ray, were the backbone of the Art Circle for many years. They seemed to do everything between them and perhaps saved it from folding on occasion. Just imagine, this was an artist who began showing work with us in 1964! Joan took care of membership and was the archivist before Richard Motley took up the reins.
I had wonderful conversations with her which had me sitting wide-eyed listening to her life’s experiences. What a character. On a visit to a bronze foundry, I recall that she was not impressed with the way they were organised and had no qualms voicing that thought loudly. She didn’t suffer fools but she was also such a kind person. Always encouraging. Visitors to their home in Bramerton were treated to a very warm welcome.
She was one of our last contacts from Norwich Art School and that period of great change for the art world. We were so lucky to have her with us. A pivotal member of the Art Circle.
I will miss her even though I only knew her for a short time.
